Communication at St Paul's

The Curriculum at St Paul’s will help learners:

  • Reflect upon the importance of spoken language development across the whole curriculum
  • Use spoken language to develop reading and writing
  • Develp quality and variety of language through speaking and listening
  • Develop vocabulary and grammar alongside an understanding for reading and writing
  • Continue to develop confidence and competence in spoken language and listening
  • Explain their understanding of books and other reading
  • Build secure foundations by using discussion to probe and remedy their misconceptions
  • Develop and use conventions for discussion and debate
  • Adopt, create and sustain a range of roles and respond appropriately to others in role
The curriculum in spoken language ensures that all learners:
  • Listen and respond appropriately to adults and their peers 
  • Ask relevant questions to extend their understanding and knowledge
  • Use relevant strategies to build their vocabulary
  • Articulate and justify answers, arguments and opinions
  • Give well-structured descriptions, explanations and narratives for different purposes, including for expressing feelings
  • Maintain attention and participate actively in collaborative conversations, staying on topic and initiating and responding to comments
  • Use spoken language to develop understanding through speculating, hypothesising, imagining and exploring ideas
  • Speak audibly and fluently with an increasing command of Standard English
  • Participate in discussions, presentations, performances, role play, improvisations and debates
  • Gain, maintain and monitor the interest of the listener(s)
  • Consider and evaluate different viewpoints, attending to and building on the contributions of others
  • Select and use appropriate registers for effective communication.

To develop these characteristics they will explore the following key concepts:

  • Listen carefully and understand: This concept involves understanding how to engage with what others are saying.
  • Develop a wide and interesting vocabulary: This concept involves building a rich, sophisticated vocabulary with which to express oneself.
  • Speak with clarity: This concept involves understanding that an audience needs to understand what is being said.
  • Tell stories with structure: This concept involves understanding how to keep an audience engaged through structured speech.
  • Hold conversations and debates: This concept involves understanding how to engage with others.
